Matthias Riedl

Matthias Riedl is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of History at Central European University in Budapest, Hungary.  His research explores the interrelation between religion and politics, with specializations in Eschatology and Apocalypticism, Political Theology, Religion and Nationalism, and Medieval Studies.  He has published many books, most recently including Die Stadt: Achse und Zentrum der Welt / The City: Axis and Centre of the World (Königshausen & Neumann, 2011), Gott oder Götter? / God or Gods? (Königshausen & Neumann, 2009), and Die religiöse Erfahrung / Religions: The Religious Experience (Königshausen & Neumann, 2008).

Riedl has held various academic positions around the world, including time as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Duke’s Department of Political Science in 2003.  His most current research looks at the emergence of revolutionary apocalypticism in the Later Middle Ages and Early Modernity, including work on a monograph of radical reformer Thomas Münzer.
